Abdi’s Priorities

Affordable Housing

Housing is not just a commodity; it is a fundamental human right that lies at the core of a healthy and secure life, offering stability, dignity, and a profound sense of belonging.

“As someone who has experienced displacement as a refugee, I know too well the importance of stable housing.”

Safe, stable housing benefits everyone. When our neighbors have a place to call home, our community becomes stronger, healthier, and more prosperous. Together, we can build a future where no one in District 14A faces the fear of losing their home.

Childcare

Education begins at birth, not just in kindergarten. Every child in Minnesota deserves a strong foundation for success.

“As a childcare owner and advocate for the past eight years, I’ve seen firsthand the importance of early learning and the significant challenges families face due to underfunding in the childcare sector.

Quality, safe, and affordable childcare is essential for our children’s future, as well as the health of our workforce and economy. As your legislator, I will work to expand eligibility for childcare assistance programs, support childcare provider startups, and ensure that data drives early childhood policy decisions to create a brighter future for all.

Access to Education

Every child in District 14A deserves access to a world-class public education, no matter their ZIP code or background. While Minnesota made historic investments in education recently, 2025 has shown us how fragile that progress can be.

This year, we’ve seen renewed threats to school funding, both from federal proposals to cut Title I and special education aid and from local opposition to key programs like free meals and inclusive curricula.

Our district’s schools still face real challenges: understaffed classrooms, outdated facilities, and underpaid educators. These issues limit student success and strain families already doing their best.

“It’s time to recommit to fully funding our public schools—not just in words, but in budgets. That means investing in modern facilities, supporting our teachers with fair pay, expanding access to mental health supports, and ensuring every child can thrive in safe, welcoming schools.”

Strong public schools are the heart of strong communities. When we invest in education, we invest in the future of Minnesota.

Public Safety

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community.

“Growing up in a troubled part of the world, I understand the high cost of insecurity. I support the Second Amendment and believe law-abiding citizens should have access to firearms for self-defense and sporting purposes.

However, we must also take measures to protect our communities, schools, and citizens from gun violence. I'm committed to supporting public safety personnel, demonstrated through my involvement in the St. Cloud Community Policing Agreement, which fosters collaboration between law enforcement and diverse communities for effective protection.

Healthcare

Healthcare is a fundamental human right—not a privilege reserved for the wealthy. Yet in 2025, we've seen renewed attacks on that right, with federal budget cuts threatening Medicaid, CHIP, and ACA subsidies, and Minnesota Republicans pushing back against efforts to expand MinnesotaCare to more families.

Right here in our district, working people continue to face crushing out-of-pocket costs—from premiums to prescription drug prices—while insurance and pharmaceutical companies rake in record profits. It’s unacceptable.

“We need a universal, single-payer healthcare system that puts people over profits. That means expanding public options like MinnesotaCare to cover more residents, capping prescription drug prices, and ensuring no one is forced to choose between getting medical help and putting food on the table.”

We must protect and expand healthcare access—not walk it back. Our community deserves better, and I'm ready to fight for it.

Support Our Local Businesses

Our economy faces significant challenges that impact us all. High living costs and inflation are straining household budgets, making it harder for families to get by.

Small businesses, the backbone of our economy, are struggling under complex regulations and limited resources.

“As a small business owner and consultant, I know firsthand how crucial these businesses are to our community’s prosperity. They create jobs, support families, and drive economic stability.

As your legislator, I will support investments in the St. Cloud Downtown Revitalization project, advocate for workers' rights, and secure additional resources for small businesses to help them thrive and contribute to our region's growth.

Climate Justice

Climate change is real, and it poses an existential threat to our planet and humanity. Its impacts are being felt across the world, and here in Minnesota, it is threatening the foundation of our identity.

Farmers are facing increasing challenges, the aging electrical grid is under strain from extreme heat, and our winters are becoming more unpredictable and harsh.

“As your legislator, I will advocate for strategies to reduce carbon emissions, support the growth of green energy like wind, solar, and biomass, and invest in local infrastructure for waste management and drinking water to ensure our communities can withstand the effects of climate change.”

Minnesota has been a leader in addressing climate change, and we must continue pushing for bold actions to protect our future.
